Elisha
Spaulding
Jul 30, 1937 — Jun 25, 2025
Elisha James Spaulding was born on July 30, 1937, in Sylvania, Georgia, as the firstborn and eldest son of the late Oliver and Janie Spaulding. Known by many names—Papa, Smally, Junior, James, Ole Boi, Ole Man, Smokey Joe, Big Brother, and Joe Black—Elisha was a beloved figure to all who knew him.
Elisha was preceded in death by his siblings Queen Esther Spaulding, Marian Spaulding-Daniels, and Abraham Spaulding. He is survived by his brothers Thomas Spaulding and John Willie Spaulding.
Elisha's legacy lives on through his children: Reginald Spaulding (Penny), James Spaulding, Troy Spaulding (Toni), the late Joyce Spaulding, Michael Spaulding (Troy), Siteria Spaulding (Anthony), Santana Spaulding (Michelle), and Antonio Smith (Glenda). He was the proud grandfather of 24 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren, along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
A true pioneer and trailblazer for the Spaulding family, Elisha immigrated to Miami, Florida, in 1952 at the age of 16, alongside the Mobley family. He helped relocate many of his family members to Miami, starting with his sister Queen Ester and her husband George Kemp in 1959, followed by his brother Thomas in 1960. He was employed at the Casa Blanca Hotel on South Beach, all while serving as a devoted provider and caretaker for his loved ones. In 1968, he brought his brothers John Willie and Abraham to Miami as well. A visionary and hardworking man, Elisha went on to establish a family-owned construction company, The Spaulding Enterprise.
In 2009, Elisha returned to his hometown of Sylvania, Georgia. In 2020, his health began to decline, and his beloved niece, Betrice Taylor, faithfully cared for him and remained by his side until his passing.
Elisha will be deeply missed. We will cherish the memories, the lessons, the laughter, and the love. You were one incredible father, grandfather, and patriarch. Your words of wisdom, your discipline, and your legacy will forever guide and inspire us. You gave us the best of yourself—and for that, we are eternally grateful.
Rest in peace, Elisha James Spaulding.
